How to Get Into Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed martial arts is a great sport to get involved in. It's very competitive, not just against an opponant, but against yourself. It's a huge test in discovering how far you can truly push yourself.

So how do you get into mixed martial arts?

You don't have to be a top notch athlete or even a "typical" athlete who is skilled in one discipline. Since this sport is essentially a combination of a variety of disciplines, it's very common to have fighters who are good in one aspect, while mediocre in another aspect. Through training you will discover your strengths which you can accentuate, while improving your weaknesses, bringing them up to a competitive level.

  • Get Instruction. You want to first learn as much as possible on your own. You can obtain self instruction by getting manuals and guides teaching you how to condition yourself to become a fighter. Condtioning is HUGE, and you need good instruction to get in shape and achieve top level conditioning. So the first thing to do is get your materials together and develop a routine to follow.
  • Begin Home Training. The easiest way to get into "mma", is begin training at home. With your conditioning guides and training manuals you can start getting yourself into fighting condition. Get a heavy bag and practice strikes and kicks. What this will do is get you into decent fighting shape. You'll be conditioned and will develop experience throwing your arms, legs, elbows, and knees around.
  • Find a Gym, Club, or Classes. Now days there are many mixed martial arts classes and even gyms which cover all aspects of fighting such as stand up, ground work, and conditioning. This is vital because you need that sparring experience that you can generally only get from a class or gym. Taking seperate classes is also an option. For instance a boxing class a few days a week, and then a jiu jitsu class on the other days.
